A little History

Our Hotel since 1968

The Hotel De Mendoza is located in the area that dates from the 16th century where the Convent of Santa Maria de Gracia was located, occupied by the Dominican nuns, which also served as a girls' school.

The Convent of Santa María de Gracia was closed in the last century, when the Exclaustration Law was complied with; From that moment on, part of the convent was used as a barracks, the orchards and gardens were divided up and by 1880 the Hotel Progreso was already there, with 26 rooms, stables and cellars on the ground floor, while on the upper floor it had 14. rooms and a large dining room. The only thing that managed to be saved from all this huge convent was the church, which a few years ago was under reconstruction and all its architectural features were respected.

The Hotel De Mendoza preserves its colonial architecture, the furniture in the rooms was hand painted by Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, originally from Colima, famous worldwide who established his own “Rangeliano” style. We also have beautiful baroque-style paintings by the Mexican artist Agustín Parra who, due to his works produced for Pope John Paul II, was named an official supplier of the Vatican. In the same way we have a beautiful mural painted by the Michoacan artist José Maria Servin who has been awarded internationally.

Prime location

The Hotel De Mendoza was built in 1968 next to the Temple of Santa Maria de Gracia, which served as the city’s first Cathedral.

During its construction, the original arches of the façade were preserved, as well as the arches that adjoin the Temple (16th century) and it is located a few steps from the Degollado Theater, the Guadalajara Cathedral and the Cabañas Cultural Institute.
