Hotel De Mendoza
Hotel de Mendoza is located in an area with a history dating back to the 16th century, where the Convent of Santa María de Gracia once stood. This convent, occupied by Dominican nuns, also served as a school for girls. The convent was closed in the 19th century due to the Law of Exclaustration, and its facilities were transformed into a barracks. The orchards and gardens were divided, and by 1880, the site housed the Hotel Progreso, which had 26 rooms, stables, and warehouses on the ground floor, and 14 rooms with a large dining room on the upper floor. The only part of the convent that remained was the church, which has been restored, respecting its original architecture.
Hotel de Mendoza preserves its charming colonial architecture. The furniture in the rooms was hand-painted by Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, a renowned artist from Colima who created the “Rangeliano” style. Additionally, we display beautiful baroque paintings by the Mexican artist Agustín Parra, who was named the official supplier to the Vatican for his works for Pope John Paul II. We also feature an impressive mural by the internationally recognized artist José María Servín from Michoacán.
